Now for the "biggie", Miss Gay Cleveland Northcoast. The 25th anniversary of the pageant was held on May 6 at Lou4ia. Jennifer Phillips, ending her reign this night. saw an emotional night for her many fans in attendance. Was I mentioned in that final speech? A mere oversight? We'll see! The results:

U4ia hosted Comedy Night on Wednesdays in June and July. Look for these to resume later in the year. I caught Maureen Brownsey, who hails from San Francisco, doing her act on July 27. She refers to her act as the “Humidity Tour," with topics ranging from catholic school, Olivia cruises (which she has performed on), and her pet peeve of plastic furniture covers, to name a

few. Look for her to be back in the future. She told me so. We're such good, good friends now.

The other big news is that Melissa (you go girl) Ross has returned to Numbers on Wednesday nights every other week. Just when you thought it would never happen. Wednesdays haven't been quite the same at the club during her absence.

Comic Maureen Brownsey scans the paper for future material.

It seems as though this column mentions her often. Well, if you worked Cleveland as much as she, you'd be in here too. It's not your average Joe or Joella that makes this columin!

Finally, have you heard the devastating news that Valley of the Dolls, the worst TV

series on CBS, has been, or soon will be, cancelled. If you haven't watched this show you've missed out on the awful acting, absolutely no continuity, young firm naked male butts, and a good laugh for half an hour. I'll miss it dearly!

Now open in Akror is Hennessey's Restaurant, beated at 157 South Main Street. Thisri 26 seat deli-restaurant is the brain

of Jerry Lischak and Stuart Hennessey. chak, an area pharmacist, is the financial backer, while Hennessey is the chef, manager and president of the corporation. A New York/New Jersey area native, he brings his experience of the past 4 years from working at East Side Mario's and as the sous chef at Silver Lake Country Club.

The deli's lunch menu offers roast beef. corned beef, strudels. New York-style cheesecake, and shrimp salad, to name a few of the items in the price range of $5.95 or le ́s. The dinner menu features Filet Mignon, veal Marsala, T-Bone steak, and scallops in strawberry sauce, in the price range of under $20.00. Daily specials are available after 4 pm. Also featured is an in-house bakery with staples such as cookies, cheesecake, pies and brownies, along with daily specials like Russian Sable. Also available are pork roll a cross between fried bologna and salami, egg creamers in chocolate, diet chocolate, strawberry, and coffee; and of course, ORIGINAL New York style bagels.

Catering is offered for outside events and

the facility can be rented on Saturday and Sunday (when the restaurant is closed), and on Monday and Tuesday evenings. A pri-

vate dining area capable of holding 30 people for either lunch or dinner meetings, or for small private parties is also available. A full bar and wine list are featured as well as non-alcoholic beer and wine.

Recent approval by the city allows Hennessey's to

set up a sidewalk cafe setting for customers' enjoyment. Friday evening offers live jazz from 7-11 pm. by the Kerry Caevette Trio, favorites from Sarah's, a nowdefunct downtown Akron jazz institution.

A great feature of the restaurant is their tieing in with the adjacent building, Main Place, and its tunnel system. This allows someone to walk from across the street, which is Cascade Plaza, under Main Street, enter the Main Place building and walk directly into the restaurant with no abuse from the elements. The Main Place tunnel system also leads to the Cascade parking and the skywalk system which links

HOUSE OF ST. JAMES

the county and city buildings.

Upcoming events sponsored by Hennessey's and Stonewall Akron feature a political speaker rally to determine the candidates best suited to represent the Akron gay community. The upcoming September 14 speaker's night will present Karen Doty (45th Dist., Ohio House), Wayne Jones (46th Dist., Ohio House), and Pat Cosgrove (Common Pleas Court Judge). The evening starts at 7 pm.

Jerry Lischak, a past president and founder of Stonewall Akron, along with John Kennedy and the current Stonewall president, Judy Byrd, have a basic set of goals for Stonewall Akron: be educational; develop coalition with gay groups and gayfriendly community members; become more gay-active. Formed in June of '93, Stonewall Akron now sees some 250 members, with the main focus being politics and business-politics being the gay agenda and business being the non-gay interest, with both working in harmony to achieve common goals.

Restaurant hours are Monday and Tuesday, 9 am to 3:30 pm.; Wednesday and Thursday, 9 am to 9 pm.; and Fridays, 9 am. to 11 pm. For more information, call 216762-6969.

A look at the latest in underground dance music from the

host of One Brother in the Basement, featuring tribal, house, trance, and breakbeat, Wednesdays on Cleveland's WRUWFM, 91.1

Trance

Jam and Spoon, Odyssey to Anyoona, Dance Pool Jam and Spoon, a.k.a. Jam El Mar and Mark Spoon, have been re-mixing for top underground acts like Age of Love, Cosmic Baby and others. It's easy to see why this new four-song EP was long-awaited. Indian vocalist Plavky assisted in this project, making it a musical curry of emotions! Like Alice's magic mushrooms, this is both nostalgic and sentimental. A true vision of Shiva.

Various Artists, Psychotrance. Moonshine

I don't see what the noise is about. This cd contains 1 cuts of earthy and spirited trance. which would be okay if it was titled that. For my $20.

when they say "psycho" I better be able to scare the Jehovah's Witnesses. Mr. C, of Shamen did a fair job of mixing it together.

Various Artists, TranceNation, Club Tools

It's a new label which I look forward to hearing more from in the near future. Twenty cuts in a 3-cd compilation. The third was brilliantly mixed by German dj Jens Mahlstedt. A few of the songs are older, but at least there are new mixes. With vibrant grooves like these. I'm glad I'll be visiting Hamburg soon.

WARNING: This is not worth paying the grossly over-priced import cost. So, get a friend who knows nothing about music to buy it. Then just tape it.
